Apple Finally Folded

Apple

I need to be honest with y’all: I did not think Apple would do it.

For years, “Apple is working on a foldable iPhone” was the rumor that showed up every spring, got everybody excited, and then quietly disappeared. It was our Bondi Blue: the thing we talked about like it was already real. Well, it’s real now. It’s called iPhone Duo, it starts at $1,999, and pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 8 a.m. Eastern. It lands in people’s hands Friday, October 23.

Here’s what we know. It opens up to a 7.6-inch screen, with a 5.4-inch phone on the outside and a small tablet on the inside. No Face ID; Apple put Touch ID back in the side button, which, frankly, some of us never stopped missing. Two colors: Star White and Night Sky. If you already know you want one, Apple opens its “Get Ready” setup on Monday, October 12, so you can pick your color and storage ahead of time and just tap confirm on Friday morning. Given the demand expected for this thing, that head start might be the difference between October 23 and sometime around Thanksgiving.

Now, the regular-guy question: should you buy one? It’s $1,999. That’s not phone money, that’s refrigerator money. My phone is how I’m available when people need me, so reliability beats novelty in my world, and first-generation anything gives me pause. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious, because this is the first genuinely new shape the iPhone has had in a long time.

And the Duo isn’t even the whole story. October is stacked.

Tuesday, October 13: Apple comes for your living room

Apple has announced a launch for Tuesday, October 13 (it’s calling it “Welcome Home”), and the reporting (Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, recapped by MacRumors) points to a smart home lineup: an all-new home hub with a 6-to-7-inch screen (people are calling it HomePad), a HomePod mini 2, and a new Apple TV 4K. The headline feature across all of it is Siri AI, the smarter Siri these devices have apparently been waiting on. The hub is expected in a tabletop version with a speaker base and a wall-mounted one, running something that may be called homeOS.

One honest caveat: Apple has announced the day, not the products. The lineup above is still reporting, not a spec sheet. So hold your wallet until Tuesday, when Apple says the details out loud.

The Mac stuff, and one word: finally

Also in the pipeline for this fall, per 9to5Mac and others: an iMac and a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip, an OLED iPad mini, and a redesigned high-end MacBook Pro with an OLED screen and, at long last, a touchscreen. The touchscreen Mac is the one where the timing gets fuzzy; it may not make the October stage and could slide. But it’s coming, and a whole generation of us who’ve been poking our laptop screens like idiots, out of habit from our phones, feel seen.

What I’m watching

October 13. It’s on Apple’s own calendar now. Not because I need a screen on my kitchen counter running my house (I don’t, yet), but because Apple’s been promising a smarter home and a smarter Siri for years, and this is the month they either deliver or don’t.

The Duo, I’ll watch from a safe distance with my wallet closed. Probably. Mostly.

What about you: are you a day-one foldable person, or are you letting somebody else find the bugs first?
